From the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries the border lands between two of the most aggressive nations in history, Scotland and England, were the domain of a fierce and warlike people known to us today as the Border Reivers.
To 'reive' means to rob.
The people of the Border country at the extremities of the two countries, lived in a war-torn territory for centuries, and resorted to theft initially as a means of holding body and soul together. Eventually it became a way of life where cattle, sheep and 'insight' and 'outsight' i.e. household goods and farming implements, were stolen from both compatriots and the people on the opposite side of the Border.
Like many a society in world history they had a rich heritage of ballad, chant, song and legend, much of which was unrecorded. Their rich lore was merely handed down from generation to generation as a means of entertainment and perpetual recognition of the times of their forebears.
In the early nineteenth century came a man who recognised that the heritage of the Border Reivers was about to be lost in time as their descendants were leaving the beautiful Border valleys to take up employment in the emerging factories of what would become the mill towns.
He scoured the Border country, visited farms and homesteads and listened and recorded all that he heard and witnessed.
In 1802 he published his findings in what is a delightful book which he called the 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border'. He thus ensured that the tales of love and tragedy, martial prowess, 'reive' and humour were preserved for posterity.
The man? Sir Walter Scott, prolific and much revered author of the nineteenth century.
'Ballads of the Anglo/Scots Border Reivers' relates but a few of the magnificent output of Sir Walter.
I hope, nevertheless, that it can promote an interest in the lives and times of the Border Reivers.
